Braves lose Arodys Vizcaino to season-ending shoulder surgery

The Braves have lost the man who was expected to lead the team in saves this season. Arodys Vizcaino will undergo season-ending surgery on his right shoulder.

Around 4 pm ET on Wednesday  the Braves released a statement that the reliever had the surgery done in New York, NY, by Dr. David Altchek.

Dr. Altchek cleaned up Vizcaino’s labrum while also removing scar tissue from his shoulder join.

The 28-year-old had been placed on the 10-day injured list on April 14. He pitched just four innings this season allowing one run.

Chris Davis sets MLB mark with 0-for-47

Chris Davis made history on Monday night. It just was. It just was not the type of history Davis desired to make.

With a new record low of just 6,585 fans at Camden Yards, Davis replaces Eugenia Velez as the definition of futility at the place for non-pitchers.

Velez began his stream with nine at-bats for the Giants in 2010 before adding another 37 at-bats without a hit in 2011 with the Dodgers.

Davis began the night with a line out to A’s right fielder Stephen Piscotty. In his second at-bat he would line out to left to Robbie Grossman. He would line out to the track with Grossman making the catch to set the new record.

Davis was not done. He would add a strike out to go 0-for-48.

It has been a hard fall for Davis after leading the majors with 53 homers in 2013 and again in 2015 with 47. Davis signed a seven-year deal worth $161 million after 2015 and ended 2018 with a record low .168 average for qualified batters.

Giants release Rene Rivera who had been competing to be backup catcher

The Giants released veteran backstop Rene Rivera on Saturday.

Rivera, 35, had been competing with Aramis Garcia and Cameron Rupp to serve as the backup to Buster Posey this season.

A year ago Rivera split time between the Angels and Braves compiling a .233 batting average and four home runs across 33 games. Given that Rivera will only cost a minor league deal, there figures to be plenty of teams willing to stash him at the Triple-A level this year.

Mike Trout has made me super jealous of $430 million deal

I could of been Mike Trout. Everyone knows I had some massive skills in Triple Play 98, All Star Baseball 2000 and so many other MLB games for consoles.

Seriously.

Mike Trout why did you do me dirty like this. I thought we were friends. It is not that I wanted you to leave the Angels or that I don’t think your a good baseball player… well its just that your going to be getting $35.8 million over the next 12 years and I, living here in the Midwest – where it is actually sunny for once, can’t even comprehend these numbers.

Dude if you make 680 plate appearances a year that averages out to almost $53,000 just to walk up to the batters box. I could do it for a fraction of that. Around here $53,000 is a pretty good number for a year of work. And you’re gonna make us all feel awful by doing that in a minute of activity.

Sure you have to stand out there in the grass on some warm days and hope that baseballs or bird poop don’t hit you in the head but honestly I spend plenty of time doing the same when my kids are playing little league. Oh and you don’t have that awkward trying to get to the game, leaving or finding out that your kids play at different times than one another.

All joking aside the biggest star in baseball now has the biggest contract. What a time to be alive.

Peter Moylan retires from baseball

After 12 seasons Peter Moylan has retired according to The Athletic.

Moylan, 40, spent nine seasons with the Braves. His retirement ends one of baseballs odd tales of how guys have made it to the majors.

A pharmaceutical rep, Moylan was discovered by the Braves during the World Baseball Classic. He had been vocal on social media about how difficult it had been for veterans to secure contracts this offseason.

Moylan plans to pitch in Italy and is considering an attempt to pitch for Australia in the next Olympics.

In 418 2/3 innings of work Moylan finishes with a 3.10 ERA in 499 games.

Jon Gray hoping weight gain helps him in 2019

While many players show up at Spring Training slimmer than the year before, Rockies starter Jon Gray is hoping a bit of weight gain improves his velocity.

Gray is up to 235 pounds according to the Denver Post after checking all the day down to just 209 at one point last year. The right hander is trying to improve upon a 5.12 ERA though 31 starts last season.

“I’m right where I need to be,” said Gray, who claimsto have eaten everything in sight while working on a weight training program. “I’ve been through it all. I’m ready to kick some (butt).”

Now 27, Gray enters the 2019 season hoping to prove he is moreso the pitcher who had a 3.67 ERA and a 1.30 WHIP though 20 starts in 2017.

Rangers sign Ben Revere to minor league deal

Ben Revere has signed with the Rangers on a minor league deal.

Revere, 30, is among several veterans the Rangers have signed in recent weeks as the team seeks to build up their depth.

Last year Revere played 40 games at Triple-A for the Angels batting .277/.319/.406 before being released at midseason.

The Rangers do not figure to offer Revere much in the way of playing time and for much of his career Revere has relied upon his speed to keep him appearing on teams’ rosters.

Revere last played in the majors in 2017 with the Angels. He is a career .284/.319/.343 hitter whose career has been highlighted by 211 stolen bases.

Chick-fil-A gives Touki Toussaint a full pan of fries without butts

Touki Toussaint got a special surprise on Saturday.  A full pan of fries, without any of those butts which the pitcher is not a fan of.

This was the culmination of a back and forth twitter conversation between Toussaint and the popular chain restaurant.

If it was not clear, Toussaint is not a fan of the butt waffle fries.

This spring Toussaint is competing for a spot in the Braves rotation after a strong finish at the end of 2018 season that saw him compile a 4.03 ERA in seven games, including five starts.

Indians add Federowicz and Wojciechowski on minors deals

The Indians probably wanted to see how many typos they could create when they signed both pitcher Asher Wojciechowski and catcher Tim Federowicz to minor league deals on Thursday.

Both players will report to spring training but figure to spend most, if not all, of the 2019 season at Triple-A.

Wojciechowski, 30, spent last season at Triple-A posting a 4.53 ERA in 119 1/3 innings of work. He began last season with the Orioles and later was released after using an opt-out in his contract. He struggled down the stretch going 0-5 with a 7.01 ERA after latching on with the White Sox Triple-A club. Wojciechowski made his big league debut with the Astros in 2015 and most recently pitched in 25 games with the Reds in the majors in 2017 where he made 8 starts and posted a 4-3 record and a 6.50 ERA overall.

The 31-year-old Federowicz appeared in 15 big league games last season, ironically with the Astros and Reds. Though he has appeared in 134 big league games since 2001, Federowicz has never really found continued playing time an holds a .199/.247/.323 batting line. It would be a surprise if spent more than a cup of coffee with the Indians this season.

Kyler Murray gives baseball the finger, chooses football

Kyler Murray, the ninth overall pick and most recent Heisman trophy winner, has chosen football over baseball.

Murray, 21, took to Twitter to show baseball fans how little he thought of their sport while saying he had trained his entire life to being the beat quarterback he could be and how he planned to help an NFL team win championships. Ouch.

Of course the biggest losers in this whole situation are the Oakland A’s who were foolish enough to waste a draft pick on Murray.

Murray will pay the A’s $1.29 million of the $1.5 million singing bonus already paid to him. He forfeits the $3.16 million owed to him in March. While the A’s retain his rights they do not get a compensation pick so basically they spent $210,000 for a guy to laugh at them for a year.

Ouch.

The list of MLB first round picks who have flamed out and never reaches the majors is long. But to draft a guy who never intended to pay for your team while you touted his athleticism on the football field is laughable.

Duda has shown an ability to hit for power in the past hitting 30 homers in 2014 and 2017 and 27 in 2015.

The Twins already have Nelson Cruz, C.J. Cron and Tyler Austin on their roster which could hurt Duda’s chances of making the team.
